Robert le Biez a extrait de son imaginaire des figures, des sculptures où le spectateur est invité à observer les effets dont il use ; notamment un jeu entre le vide et le plein permettant à l'objet de s'inscrire pleinement dans l'espace, si ce n'est de le traverser. Mais ce n'est pas tout, les lignes des sculptures sont multiples, les courbes se contrarient ou s'embrassent suivant une logique quasi scientifique. Ainsi, l'objet évoque au fil de la progression des lignes, une histoire, souvent en rapport avec les émotions ou encore le mouvement avec Danseuse, Flamenco 1. Ces formes multiples font de chaque œuvre que produit l'artiste un mouvement original, singulier, mettant le spectateur dans un état de méditant. Revenons à l’objet lui-même et attardons-nous à l’utilisation de la couleur. Chacune des couleurs pourrait signifier un rythme, un mouvement. Ce qui est certain c’est que l’emploi de la couleur, pour ne pas dire sa prégnance, donne aux sculptures une tonalité autre, sans elle, elles auraient été muettes. Si certaines des sculptures sont danseuses, toutes sont des sons, des mouvements dans l’espace qu’elles occupent de manière totale, glorieuse et invincible.

Robert Le Biez is full of surprises; indeed an artist with an expansive, progressive encompass. His works transmit a range of feeling tones through the attributes of beauty, subtlety, multi-dimensionality, clarity, humor, delicacy, grace, crookedness, movement and music, erotica, wit, dexterity, rawness and joie de vivre; just to name a few.

Le Biez received outstanding reviews for his participation in a group exhibition in New York with his supreme work ‘Secret Flower’ and others. Suzie Walshe of NY Arts Magazine writes: ‘The central focus, and for many viewers the highlight of the show was the work of French artist Robert Le Biez, who invites viewers to rejoice with him in his contemplative and poignant rendition of the human relationships in their most exposed and honest light.’

In his recent work ‘Anorexic Souls’ Le Biez is facing us with what we hate most about being human. ‘Anorexic Souls’ are standing from the point of the default setting of the human mind: FEAR. The body language is clearly agitated; the male and female are in a back-to-back relationship of co-dependency and manipulative power exchange. We see the self-identified-victims of ‘Anorexic Souls’ freaking out in the face of the artist’s question; ‘ Is a life worth living when perceived as for survival alone?’ By conforming to human transgression we choose to die continuously in every precious moment of our life. ‘Anorexic Souls’ is what that hungry-ghost state of mind looks like in the mirror. Robert Le Biez suggests the answer of the question is ‘No, it is not worth living/dying a life of survival alone’ and so chooses LOVE.

crowded that people had to go outside on the street in front of the gallery to
open some space.

“Summer in SoHo” Exhibition
August 3-28, 2010

*NEW YORK, NY – July 21th, 2010 – *Ward-Nasse Gallery is pleased to announce the up-coming group exhibition “Summer in SoHo” Curated by Basak Malone to take place between August 3-28, 2010.

This hot “Summer in SoHo” will be cognized from the perspective of 8 artists: Stefan Raasch, Robert Le Biez, Cecilia Flaten, Micci Cohan, Graciela Cassel, Michel Beaucage, Carlos Aquilino and Nabeela Al-Khayer.

Nabeela Al-Khayer is an artist based in Bahrain. Her expressive portraits of dense and unknowing subjects originate hope in the artist that their secrets will be revealed to themselves before anybody else.

Carlos Aquilino is interested mainly in a sense of humor. His pictures flow into infinity, spontaneously feeding us with the funny and serious happenings as well as letters and words that are in the endless details of his drawings.

Michel Beaucage is a gesturer; his paintings seeking the active line in melodic colors. We are faced with works that do not stay put but move in and out of abstractions strangely familiar for fleeting moments.

Graciela Cassel can be likened to an architect in her building and deconstructing forms that are structural and surprising. The Argentinean artist based in NYC plays with objects, concepts, surfaces and dimensions breaking all the rules including the ones of exploration. Yet her works come
back to secure ground through the tent pegs of her mastery.

Micci Cohan’s burlesque imagery is undoubtedly very urban even in the still lives and particularly of a New Yorker perspective, while the artist travels some of the most exotic cities with her brushes, multi-media and
collages.

Forever stretching landscapes, sunsets, patios in twilight, the birthing nature, seas and trees in oils are on Cecilia Flaten’s canvasses.

Robert Le Biez, in some ways like Carlos Aquilino, is indeed light and humorous. Le Biez utilizes wood in his sometimes ironic, always elegant, colorful and joyous sculptures. The French artist’s sculptures exist in a
state that is somewhere between 2D and 3D that is purely cerebral.

And no regrets swim in German pop artist Raasch’s work. He claims that art is the matrix between human beings. It is the room in which we act and react. The most important step of contemporary art for Stefan Raasch is, creating and improving that room – by means of describing the present and
being able to laugh for the future.

An intriguing group exhibition, My Funny Valentine: A Tribute to Chet Baker curated by the outsider Tchera Niyego, featured Carl Andre, Ilsabé von Dallwitz, Jennifer Contini Enderby, Rudi Keimel, Ayşe Küçük, Robert Le Biez, and Michelle Sakhai. The subject matter of the exhibition explores the nature of love, and perception, visual and otherwise, in relation to the theater of passions and life. Niyego utilizes the talent of her artists to investigate the circumstance, psychology and the blueprint that comprise the performance of love.

Captivated and inspired by Chet Baker’s tale of love and ardor, Niyego is almost effortless in her selection of artists who recreate the beauty of Baker’s blues in this omnipotent and wicked show. Indulging our whimsical free spirits into a realm that is both visionary and contemplative, the exhibition is experimental yet well- studied. The blending of genres alone forms an exploration into the space where all sorts of threads of life merge into a united fabric of experience and relationships.

The central focus, and for many viewers the highlight of the show was the work of French artist Robert Le Biez, who invites viewers to rejoice with him in his poignant, cognitive rendition of the human relationships in their most exposed, honest light. Le Biez’s sculptures exist in a state that is somewhere between 2D and 3D. They are constructed out of sheets of thin wood, layering on top of each other, and dissecting each other at different points. The bright reds, yellows, blues, and greens pop against each other in a dramatic flare, accentuating their different angles and planes. In contrast to their perpendicular joints the wood plates themselves are cut and molded into elegant jazzy lines that flow gracefully. In the artist’s A Tribute to Chet Baker the contours are made with such delicacy it would appear that they were being contorted and described by the wind… In other pieces, such as Secret Flower or Havva, the contours have a more still stance, with a more even weight, dispersed throughout the entire piece. In these pieces, there is not a natural sense of mass or gravity, but a jumbled balancing act of it all, a circus composition that allocates an even presence to everything regardless of measurement. Working against nature by creating sculpture that is formed in the in between 2.5D space, La Biez coaxes viewers deeper, leaving them disoriented. Despite its chaotic nature, this balance brings a paradoxical harmony to the pieces. Having that constant visual action of hiding, seeking and folding inside and then revealing themselves once again outside, creates an interaction that establishes a comforting and pleasing progression of movement throughout the pieces. This almost peaceful play comes as somewhat of a surprise and quite a contrast to the other prominent qualities of the pieces. Although they are indeed comprised of wood, these sculptures are anything but mechanical or inflexible—they stir and dance with life, finding an exuberant breath in vivid colors, excited lines, and an animated composition.

Ilsabé von Dallwitz, a purist artist who creates digital works that create reflections themselves, leaving the viewer unsure of her medium. By focusing on the lack of boundaries between being conscious and subconscious, and their endless upward, downward, and sideways reach, the artist asks the viewer to reconsider self-constructed barriers. Dallwitz’s ambiguous works add another dimension of self-reflection to the show.

Emerging artist Ayşe Küçük’s approach to My Funny Valentine is subtle and delicate, though highly dynamic nonetheless. Razor Kiss deals with the fear and angst of “falling” in love. Utilizing the “Pink Panther” as a metaphor for this choice of sentiment, Küçük creates an atmospheric work that captures the mood of a love lost. She constructs carefully designed compositions that contrast beautifully with the Minimalist work of Carl Andre, who creates bold and powerful conceptual statements that demonstrate the artist’s excavation of secret memories and hidden love stories. An artist not only famous for his easy, child’s-play yet bearably—conceptual works, but also infamous for his temperamental relationship with his wife Ana Mendieta, the fatal performing artist; Andre adds a note of charming simplicity to My Funny Valentine. Andre is certainly one of the artists in My Funny Valentine with a delirious, hallucinatory air attempting to transcend both the clinical environment of the gallery space, and the usual expectations of the art world.

Michelle Sakhai and Rudi Keimel’s visionary works create images that combine light and lucidity, demonstrating both artists’ commitment to the merging of environment and sense of space. The impressionistic poise of the Keimel’s paintings reiterates the theatrical intent and unreal presence. Regardless of the different works’ vivacity, there is something in the broader picture that ties all of the artist’s pieces together. The juxtaposition of the human touch and emotions with geometric or architectural elements is an affair that remains constant throughout. His work, in some, sparsely spread paint cleanly contained within geometric sequences, somewhat referential to Mondrian’s work, endures and abides in the continuity of Keimel’s strength. In others, there is the same transparent application of paint, but with some subtle gradation and movement to and from altered shades.

Working with paint in a sculptural capacity, Jennifer Contini Enderby recognizes the medium’s potential: she rolls, smears, and folds an assortment of intimately personal materials in order to maximize their qualities. In her piece, compositional textures investigate an expanse of popular culture-based themes. A new breed of collage and sculptural painting, Contini Enderby’s Messy Hearts invites viewers into the artist’s subjectivity through mysterious visages. Painted in such an attentive, detailed way the painted form becomes a narrative that possesses a vitality making the wall piece appear closer to life. Finding warmth in the ordinarily cold hues of nightfall blue, gunmetal silvers, and crystal gray, Contini Enderby gives us a way to find a slight flush in that silent stone, and maybe even imagine a pulse underneath that hard-knuckled surface of a broken heart. Layers of paint, pigment, and resin are applied in layer upon layer; the result is a representation that is capricious. Expressive and fantastical, the improvisational work of this multifaceted artist reveals the hidden side of her and her subjects’ disposition.

Tchera Niyego brings together Ayşe Küçük, Ilsabé von Dallwitz, Carl Andre, Jennifer Contini Enderby, Michelle Sakhai, Robert LeBiez and Rudi Keimel in this very special show which explores the alternately political, passionate, melancoly, and spiritual means by which life is experienced and observed. The exhibition employs each artist’s own idiosyncratic fluency in multifarious forms of discourse from painting, and sculpture, to digital work, collage and impressionism. Through each of the poetic works, My Funny Valentine consciously conceals the borders between art and life, fiction and reality, and private and public.

Featuring legendary American Minimalist Carl Andre, My Funny Valentine utilizes the notoriety of Andres personal relationships (including that of his wife, artist Ana Mendieta) to form a layered conceptual show. From love gained, desired, to lost, Tchera Niygeo forms a dialogue that speaks to every viewer.

Captivated and inspired by Chet Baker’s tale of love and passion, Tchera Niyego is most agile at recreating the beauty of Baker’s blues in this powerful show. From the soft and gentle curves of Ilsabé von Dallwitz, to Rudi Keimel’s imagery of the horizon and landscape rendered in muted orange, yellow ochre, deep purple, My Funny Valentine brings to mind the sun burning the last bit of its energy before disappearing into the nightfall. A dexterous sculpture and colorist, Robert LeBiez invites viewers to rejoice with him in his contemplative and poignant rendition of the human body in its bare state.

A new breed of collage, painting and sculpture Jennifer Contini Enderby’s work invites viewers to a world full of vibrant colors and mysterious visages. Enderby gracefully incorporates picturesque elements into the collages she creates—works that stand for a reality observed through her own eyes, imagination and wedding dress. The result is a representation that is dreamy, capricious, and out of this world. Ayşe Küçük’s atmospheric palette captures the mood perfectly. Her art teaches the viewer that pure art springs from a meditative state of mind. Expressive and fantastical, the innovative imagery of this multifaceted artist reveals the hidden side of her subjects’ personalities.

Many of the works in My Funny Valentine have a delirious, hallucinatory air, as if the artists are attempting to transcend both the clinical environment of the gallery space, and the usual expectations of the art world.
